URBSAFE GHANA PRESS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Date: 3rd August 2025

Ghana’s Road Safety Crisis Worsens: Over 1,500 Deaths in 6 Months, Majority in Eastern, Ashanti, and Greater Accra Regions
UrbSafe Ghana expresses deep alarm at newly released statistics from the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) indicating that over 1,500 lives were lost in road crashes within the first half of 2025, with more than 60% of these fatalities occurring in just three regions: Eastern, Ashanti, and Greater Accra.
This disturbing regional concentration underscores the urgent need for localized, high-impact interventions, particularly along intercity highways and urban hotspots.

The Reality: A Crisis for Vulnerable Road Users
• 1,500+ deaths in 6 months (2025 NRSA data).
• 78% of victims were male, suggesting a gendered risk pattern, especially among commercial drivers.
• Over 60% of national crashes occur in Eastern, Ashanti, and Greater Accra—regions with high traffic volume and weak enforcement on key corridors.
“We cannot continue to normalize these tragedies. The data is clear—our roads are claiming too many lives, especially among pedestrians, motorcyclists, and youth,” said Mohammed Gazali Salifu, Executive Director of UrbSafe Ghana. “We call on government agencies, local authorities, and civil society to move from awareness to aggressive, coordinated action.”

UrbSafe Ghana Recommends the Following Immediate Actions:

  1. Regionally Targeted Enforcement
    • Deploy mobile speed cameras and checkpoints on high-crash corridors in Eastern, Ashanti, and Greater Accra.
    • Prioritize enforcement against speeding, unlicensed operation, and overloaded vehicles.
  2. Safer Urban Speed Limits
    • Introduce 30 km/h zones in urban areas where traffic mixes with pedestrians and riders.
    • Ensure stricter monitoring in school zones and market areas.
  3. Gender-Responsive Education & Media Campaigns
    • Launch campaigns focusing on young male riders and drivers.
    • Promote helmet use, defensive driving, and respect for pedestrian rights.
  4. Urban Infrastructure Improvements
    • Invest in sidewalks, pedestrian crossings, reflective signage, and speed-calming designs in crash-prone neighborhoods.
  5. Data Transparency and Community Engagement
    • Expand local crash data collection for real-time response.
    • Involve community groups in monitoring and reporting road hazards.
